Four days in China’s mountain city: Ciqikou Ancient Town, Hongyadong, the Liziba light rail, pandas at Chongqing Zoo and a hillside hotpot dinner.
This short break stays in Chongqing, the mountain city on the Yangtze, and covers its best-known sights: the old alleys of Ciqikou Ancient Town, Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street, the lantern-lit stilt houses of Hongyadong, Zhongshan 4th Road and the hillside footpath of Shancheng Lane.
You ride two stops on the Liziba Light Rail, the train that passes through a building, see giant pandas at Chongqing Zoo and finish with a hotpot dinner at Pipa Garden, set on terraces with night views over the city. All three nights are at the Four Points by Sheraton on the Yuzhong Peninsula, or similar.
Group tour. You travel with other guests on a fixed departure — departures every Sunday in 2027. Prefer your own dates and a guide just for your party? The private version of this tour runs every day.
How the price works: CAD $675 per person sharing a twin or double room (land only — flights to Chongqing and home from Chongqing are not included). Gratuities for your guide and driver, CAD $80 per person (CAD $20 a day), are added at checkout; the estimate on this page already includes them. The single supplement is CAD $238.
You are met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is free to rest after your flight.
After breakfast you visit Ciqikou Ancient Town, a centuries-old quarter of crisscrossing alleys lined with local snack stalls and traditional handicrafts, for a taste of Bashu folk life.
Next is Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street, Chongqing’s commercial heart, with high-rise towers, shopping malls and long-established brands. You then visit Hongyadong, a complex of stilt houses built in layers against the hillside and brilliantly lit at night.
After breakfast you ride the Liziba Light Rail for two stops to experience the famous train that runs straight through a residential building, a good example of the mountain city’s three-dimensional transport. You then visit Chongqing Zoo to see giant pandas and other rare animals.
In the afternoon you stroll along Zhongshan 4th Road, a tree-shaded street with well-preserved modern historical sites, and explore Shancheng Lane, an old hillside footpath that keeps the streetscape of old Chongqing and offers wide city views.
Dinner is at Pipa Garden Hotpot, listed by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest hotpot restaurant, with terraced tables across the hillside and night views over the city. It was featured in the documentary series A Bite of China.
At the appropriate time you are transferred to the airport for your flight.

Practical guidance to help you prepare for and get the most out of this trip.
How the price is built. Per person in Canadian dollars, two travellers sharing a twin or double room. Children pay the adult price and have their own bed. Gratuities of CAD $80 per person are added at checkout. The single supplement is CAD $238; a room cannot be shared with a stranger, so a solo traveller pays it.
Group tour. Departs every Sunday. You join other travellers; group size varies with the date. Group departures are not guaranteed with two travellers: a date runs once enough travellers have booked it. If your date does not run, we tell you in advance and you choose another date or get a full refund.
Arrival and departure days: airport transfers on Days 1 and 4 are by vehicle with a driver; no guide accompanies these transfers.
Hills and steps: Chongqing is built on steep hills, and Hongyadong, Shancheng Lane and Ciqikou involve many stairs and slopes. Comfortable walking shoes are a must.
Spicy food: Chongqing hotpot is very spicy by default; ask the restaurant for a mild or split (yuanyang) pot if you prefer.
