Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument of Discoveries)
Built in 1960, the Monument to the Discoveries stands proudly along the waterfront and has become one of Portugal’s most iconic landmarks. Shaped like a giant stone ship sailing toward the sea, the monument commemorates Portugal’s great maritime explorers. Intricate sculptures depict Prince Henry the Navigator, Vasco da Gama, and over 80 important figures from Portugal’s Age of Discovery, including navigators, missionaries, generals, and scientists. A large cross on the reverse side symbolizes the country’s religious heritage.

Jerónimos Monastery
Constructed in 1502, Jerónimos Monastery is a magnificent example of Manueline architecture and a symbol of Portugal’s prosperity during its maritime empire era. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, the monastery is considered one of Portugal’s greatest architectural masterpieces.

Belém Tower
designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, Belém Tower is one of Lisbon’s most recognizable landmarks. Once serving as a customs checkpoint and fortress guarding the harbor, it marked both the departure point for explorers and the welcoming sight for sailors returning home. Local sailors once said, “When you see Belém Tower, you know you are home.”

After breakfast, depart for Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its fairy-tale landscapes. Visit the colorful Pena Palace (entrace included), perched high in the hills and surrounded by lush gardens.

Continue to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe, where dramatic cliffs overlook the Atlantic Ocean.

Pena Palace
Begin your journey in the fairy-tale hills of Sintra with a visit to the magnificent Pena Palace and the enchanting Pena Park and Gardens. Perched high above the town, Pena Palace is one of Portugal’s most iconic landmarks and a masterpiece of 19th-century Romantic architecture. Its vibrant red and yellow towers, decorative terraces, Moorish domes, and Neo-Gothic details create a magical atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Europe. Originally built on the ruins of an ancient monastery, the palace was transformed into a royal summer residence by King Ferdinand II and today stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Cape Da Roca
Continue westward to the dramatic cliffs of Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe. Here, towering sea cliffs plunge into the crashing Atlantic Ocean, creating one of Portugal’s most spectacular coastal landscapes. The famous stone monument marks this geographical point with the poetic inscription once written by Portuguese poet Luís de Camões: “Where the land ends and the sea begins.” The scenery is especially breathtaking on windy days, when waves crash violently against the rugged coastline and seabirds glide above the cliffs.

Travel to Tomar, a historic town closely linked to the Knights Templar, and enjoy a city tour.

Continue to Fátima, one of the world’s most important pilgrimage destinations, where you can visit the Sanctuary and Basilica associated with the apparitions of 1917.

Fatima:
A site of a celebrated religious miracle where three young shepherds are said to have seen an apparition of the Virgin Mary in 1917. Explore the Basilica and Sanctuary on your own before dinner at your hotel with your travel companions.

Depart for Coimbra, home to one of Europe’s oldest universities. Visit the historic university complex (entrace included), including the famous Joanina Library.

Continue to Porto and enjoy an introductory sightseeing tour, including views of the Douro River, its bridges, and the charming Ribeira district.

It is known for its historic campus, especially the Baroque-style Joanina Library and the Royal Palace of Alcáçova. The university has a strong academic reputation and is a major center for research and education in Portugal.

Explore Porto on a full-day tour. See the exterior of Livraria Lello, one of the world’s most beautiful bookstores, visit Clérigos Tower, and admire Porto Cathedral (entrance included). Stroll through the lively Ribeira district along the Douro River. An optional Douro River cruise (not included) is available for a different perspective of the city.
