Four days in Zhangjiajie: Yuanjiajie’s sandstone pillars, Tianzi Mountain, Tianmen Mountain and Cave, Golden Whip Stream and Baofeng Lake.
This short trip covers the highlights of Zhangjiajie in Hunan province, staying three nights at a Hampton by Hilton near the National Forest Park, or similar. You arrive to a boat ride on Baofeng Lake, then spend a full day in the park among the sandstone pillars of Yuanjiajie, on the Tianzi Mountain cableway and aboard the Ten-Mile Gallery mini-train.
The third day starts on the Golden Whip Stream trail and climbs Tianmen Mountain by cableway and shuttle bus to see Tianmen Cave, ending with the colourful night scene at the 72 Strange Buildings.
Private tour. Just your own party with a private guide and vehicle, starting on any day you choose in 2027 (minimum two travellers). Travelling on a budget? The group version of this tour costs less and leaves on fixed dates.
How the price works: CAD $1,325 per person sharing a twin or double room (land only — flights to Zhangjiajie and home from Zhangjiajie are not included). Gratuities for your guide and driver, CAD $80 per person (CAD $20 a day), are added at checkout; the estimate on this page already includes them. The single supplement is CAD $263.
Arrive in Zhangjiajie by high-speed train or flight. You are met at the station or airport and taken to Baofeng Lake for a boat ride on calm water ringed by green karst peaks, before checking in at your hotel.
Drive into Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and explore the Yuanjiajie Scenic Area, whose towering quartz-sandstone pillars inspired the floating Hallelujah Mountains in Avatar.
Continue to the Tianzi Mountain Scenic Area and ride the Tianzi Mountain cableway for wide views over the sea of peaks. Finish at Ten-Mile Gallery, where a sightseeing mini-train takes you up and back through a valley of oddly shaped rock formations.
Start with a walk along Golden Whip Stream, a forest trail beside a clear stream beneath sandstone peaks. Then head to Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park, riding the cableway and the park shuttle bus to the mountain scenery and Tianmen Cave, a huge natural arch through the mountain.
In the evening, visit the 72 Strange Buildings, a Tujia-style complex lit up in colour, for a taste of western Hunan’s culture and nightlife.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport at the scheduled time for your onward flight.
